Movie Review: Dredd

DreddIt brings with Judge Dredd couldn’t: quality.

Set in the future, violence has overcome society. The only authority is a police-force called the “Judges”. When Judge Dredd and a trainee get trapped inside a building, they are taking up a gang who distributes a drug called “Slo-Mo”. Don’t dwell around the story. It makes no sense, but shouldn’t bother you. This movie is clearly meant for entertainment and visual spectacularly and it doesn’t fail to deliver. The infamous Judge Dredd receives a mission and gets assistance by a trainee with psychic abilities. This trainee, Anderson, is played by Olivia Thirlby. Because her helmet interferes with her abilities, she goes around without wearing one (and we should be grateful).

The interaction between Judge Dredd and Anderson is limited to a couple of sentences, with the musky voice of Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) standing out. Dredd is filled by action, in every corner at every time. Setting is futuristic and grey, but it didn’t bother me. All scenes look awesome, although we never get to see “happy” pictures. It is cool, it is fast and I really enjoyed it.

In comparison to Judge Dredd, this movie is way better. Even for non sci-fi fans this will be a good watch.
