Storyline: The Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl crossed the Pacific ocean in a balsa wood raft in 1947, together with five men, to prove that South Americans already back in pre-Columbian times could have crossed the sea and settle on Polynesian islands. After financing the trips with loans and donations they set off on an epic 101 days long trip across 8000 kilometers, while the world was waiting for the result of the trip. The film tells about the origin of the idea, the preparations and the events on the trip. Kon-Tiki was named after the Inca sun god, Viracocha, and "Kon-Tiki" is an old name for this god. Heyerdahl filmed the expedition, which later became the Academy award winning documentary in 1951, and wrote a book about the expedition which was translated into 70 languages and sold more than 50 millions copies around the world. Heyerdahl believed that people from South America could have settled Polynesia in pre-Columbian times, although most anthropologists now believe they did not. ... (Written by OJT on IMDB.com)

Kon-TikiWOW… Just… WOW!

What an amazing Movie this was! I was unfamiliar with the entire story and the first Movie of Kon-Tiki, but I am impressed. Kon-Tiki is about the legendary explorer Thor Heyerdahl and his 4300 nautical miles (+/- 7964 kilometers) voyage across the Pacific Ocean on a balsa wood raft. Set in 1947, he undertakes this mission to prove his theory that South Americans could have settled in Polynesia in Pre-Columbian times. This story actually happened and was produced by Thor Heyerdahl himself. This documentary won an Academy Award in 1951. His book became a world-wide best-seller.

This version of Kon-Tiki is not a re-make of the original documentary, but shows how Thor Heyerdahl made his documentary. We see him building a raft after an Inca Model and only using the material they used in those days. What we see is this epic journey of Thor and his friends. The conflicts they have as a result of being unexperienced sailors and the growing fear about the raft’s safety is something we cannot imagine. They did use modern equipment such as a radio, sextant and a camera to navigate and film this documentary. And they did receive rations of food to survive. But other than that, they had to pray the balsa wood raft would hold and take them to their destination.

What we get to see is beautiful. The dangers they endure are filmed phenomenally. Sharks, Whales, Wind/Storm and the Ocean itself. It gets the viewer to “feel” what such a journey might have been like. Inspiring to say the least. Kon-Tiki is mostly spoken in Norwegian and acted by Norwegian actors. This took me a minute or 2 to adjust, but it doesn’t bother at all. In fact, it makes the Movie more realistic. A definite one to watch!
