Review: Total Recall

The Trailer looked awesome, but is the remake better than the original?

I couldn’t help but compare it immediately to the originial Total Recall (1990) with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone. It’s not entirely the same story, but it has a lot of the same features as the original. Sony Pictures wrote the following storyline:

For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid, even though he’s got a beautiful wife who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man as he finds himself on the run from the police.

The story is really chaotic and that works both ways. On the one hand it creates suspense and lot’s of action, on the other hand it creates chaos. Colin Farrell does a good job as “Douglas Quaid” and it was refreshing to see him at work again. All the others actors do a good job too, with a solid performance of Bryan Cranston who some of us know as Walter White (Breaking Bad). The lovely Kate Beckinsale shows that her Underworld fighting skills are still very much alive and Jessica Biel convinces as the mysterious “Melina”.

The original Total Recall was easier to watch. This version is just a rollercoaster ride and makes little sense other than the constant Inception type wondering. It lacks the feel and warmth of the original, but it makes up for it with special effects. To me, this movie was choatic but very entertaining. I really loved the action, the special effects and it never hurts the eye to see both Kate Beckinsale AND Jessica Biel.
