Review: V/H/S

By Poort for MovieAddictz.com

As horror is my favourite genre, I was really anxious to see V/H/S. I read reports that audiences in the USA actually stood up and left the Theatre while watching this movie (supposedly they were too afraid to continue watching). A new hit since Paranormal Activity 1 or just a hype? The same documentary style is maintained, although this movie is actually a collection of V/H/S tapes. The story is about a group of guys (low life criminals) breaking and entering a house only to find the owner dead in a room. This room contains several TV’s and a VHS recorder. They decide to watch the several tapes one by one and they see shocking footage where strange things occur…

When viewing horror movies, they are basically 2 genres: horror/comedy and horror/thriller. Comedy filled horrors mostly contain lot’s of nudity and over the top gore. Thriller filled horrors are more serious and actually have a story. V/H/S Has a little of both. What I liked the most is the pace of the movie. With all those different V/H/S tapes it is basically a compilation of short horror movies. Some are better than others, but all of them are good to watch and as a movie it helps to keep the viewer excited/thrilled instead of getting bored.

V/H/S has several flaws. The acting isn’t impressive and neither is the camera work. The “Blair Witch Project” effect is not as effective due to so many different settings and I for one like to have still images. All that shocking, because cameras are handheld, is quite annoying. As for the acting… With so many different people to play a role I can imagine it can be very expensive to hire good actors/actresses. They do offer a good variation though and it’s refreshing to see different faces.

To rate V/H/S as a horror movie only, I have to say it is really good. There is a lot of suspense, “freaky” things, gore and the pace is high. The compilation of the different footage works well. The movie is sort of a mix between The Ring and Paranormal Activity with a story of its own. To rate V/H/S as a quality DVD / Blu-Ray release, I would advice non-horror fans to stay away from this release.

As for the claims of the movie being to scary to watch…

Is it too scary to watch? – NO – Is there any reason to leave the Theatre? – NO – Any health risks? – Only if you suffer from epilepsy as the movie flashes/flickers a lot –
